Mark E. Strome
Mark Eugene Strome grew up working on a farm in Upstate New York. While never a straight-A student in high school, Mark excelled at math and, at the behest of his guidance counselor, decided to pursue a college degree in Engineering. Initially rejected by Old Dominion University, his fathers’ impassioned call, persuaded admissions to accept him on a probationary period, where he graduated with honors in 1978.
After earning his B.S. in Engineering from ODU, he went on to receive his M.S. in Economics in 1980 from the University of California at Berkeley, further fostering his business acumen.
Following his academic success, Mr. Strome laid the groundwork for his hedge fund career first as a management consultant, then in the securities industry, establishing his first hedge fund as a Partner and Portfolio Manager at Kaye Anderson. In 1992, Mr. Strome went on to found Strome Investment Management and Strome Securities L.P., where he is currently the Chief Investment Officer, and Chairman of Strome Investment Management L.P. His companies reflect his entrepreneurial instincts, in support of early stage companies across many different sectors.
The Strome Family Foundation was established in 1993 to support programs addressing local needs to larger global issues, primarily in education, the arts and medical research. Their philanthropic investments are made with the same strategy as their business, as venture donors looking for high returns. Most recently, the foundation pledged $11 million to endow the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University, and nurture a culture of entrepreneurship both university-wide and across the region.
In recognition of Mr. Strome’s long-time support of ODU’s mission and his entrepreneurial accomplishments, the university conferred upon him an honorary doctorate in 1998.
