The Strome Family Foundation: Venture funding, seeking high social return
We are venture philanthropists whose overriding mission is to give a hand-up, rather than a hand-out. We support empowerment while enhancing dignity. We fund “entrepreneurial” organizations and initiatives whose actions transcend the simple solution to make a real—and sustainable—difference. We are motivated by the age-old axiom: “If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.”
When we started the Strome Foundation in 1993, it was our intention to create a foundation that could start simply and grow with our family and our interests—while reflecting our mission and conviction to give a hand-up, rather than a hand-out.
In the for-profit world, we have a strong desire to support entrepreneurship as the most effective way of generating empowerment—by creating companies that create jobs, which then create more and lower-cost goods and services, which then creates a higher standard of living, which then creates wealth, and which then creates more empowered citizens. Similarly, at the cornerstone of all our philanthropic endeavors we seek to support entrepreneurial organizations and initiatives that motivate and empower people while enhancing their dignity. We fund “entrepreneurial” organizations and initiatives whose actions transcend the simple solution to make a real—and sustainable—difference.
Our primary interests lie in the arts, education, and medical research. We are looking for entrepreneurs that are passionate and committed to enhancing our world. This might mean that we would provide backing to validate a program that can then be expanded to have a greater impact. It might mean that we would fund a program’s first capital drive to establish a permanent presence. And it might mean that we would be interested by medical research that is on the brink of acceptance.
